Young's Luxury Double Chocolate Stout

Country - United Kingdom

Percentage - 5.2%

Brewing company - Wells & Youngs Ltd

When poured this is a dark chocolate beer with a frothy beige head. Coco, dark chocolate and roasted malt flavours aromas are present. Complex roasted malt flavour with coffee and dark chocolate is present upon tasting without being too sweet. The beer has a noticeably watery mouth feel that explodes into the roasted smokey flavours. It is not the type of beer that can be quaffed, but compliments dark chocolate cake exceedingly well. This beer has its place and that is to compliment chocolate deserts.

Verdict - OK

Erdinger Dunkle

Country - Germany

Percentage - 5.6%

Brewing company - Priavtbrauerei Seit

When poured this is an amber brown coloured beer that is slightly cloudy, with a creamy tan brown head. A soft banana and wheat is present as it is with a typical Weiss, but a hit of toast and caramel is also present. This beer is filled with fresh wheat flavours, warm caramel, cinnamon and malt are evident on the palate. This is a Weiss bier brewed with a portion of darker caramelised malts. It has the fresh feeling of a Weiss bier with the added touch of spice, malt, roasted aromas and caramel. The beer's spicy flavour reportedly results form the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. It acquires its typical flavour from maturing in the bottle. A good beer lighter in taste than appearance.

Weihenstephaner Tradition

Country - Germany

Percentage - 5.1%

Brewing company - Bayerische Straatsbrauerei Weihenstephaner

When poured a dark, deep copper beer with no effervescence and a decent white foamy head with a mild aroma of caramel and toasted malt. The taste is again of carmel and toasted malt, with a crisp dry finish. This is not Maca's style of beer and Bernadette (my mother) states 'This is a huge disappointment.'

Verdict - Palatable

Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier Dunkle

Country - Germany

Percentage - 5.3%

Brewing company - Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephaner

When poured this is a deep caramel coloured beer with a big two finger head, from a gentle pour, that produces a large fruity aroma. Maca didn't think he would like this one being a dark malted beer, but he found himself going back for more. A complex beer with a rich fruitiness of banana and hints of cinnamon. This beer is foamy until the last drop, with a respectable amount of lacing. This is a dunkle that also knows its a Hefe, fabulously drinkable.

Verdict - Excellent

These reviews are shaped by our personal tastes and so you should know that both Maca and myself don't find Belgium styled beer particularly appetising and Maca is not a fan of dark beers. Also we both think ginger beers are fucked.

To see some our funnier reviews have a look at anything that scored less than good, we usually go to town on these beers.

It is important to look close at the beers you are buying. Many beers that you think are imported may be brewed under license and these beers are nowhere near as good as there imported brothers, so always look for the 'Imported' logo. When shopping it's well worth the small amount extra you'll pay.

You may of heard someone say 'why pour a beer? Its already in a glass' well those people need to understand is that to get full flavour out of your beer, aroma is key and the only way to truly appreciate the aroma is to pour it. So everyone pour it if you can and tell any wanker that says that to 'fuck off'.

If you've had look at this blog and are thinking... gee it would be nice to try some of these beers that i've seen here but i really can't afford it, well we think you need to get your priorities in order, however here's a top tip from Maca and myself. We brew our everyday drink at a local Brew By You, a chain of microbreweries that allow you to use their equipment and their recipes to brew excellent quality beer for only half the regular price. So the money we save we put into buying new untried beers. This is a great option for someone who wants to make there wallet a bit heavier, get involved in the brewing process or reduce your intake of preservatives This is good for your health but it also reduces the effects of a hangover.
